You Don’t Age Out of Strength

You Don’t Age Out of Strength

Ageing isn’t the problem. Losing muscle is.

As we get older, it’s normal for muscle mass to decline – especially for women. But: muscle loss isn’t inevitable. It’s largely a response to inactivity, not age itself.

That idea is backed by growing research in muscle health. One of the leading voices in this space is Dr Vonda Wright, an orthopaedic surgeon and internationally recognised expert in active ageing and muscle longevity. Her work focuses on how strength training impacts long-term mobility, independence, and performance as we age.

Dr Wright’s research shows that even in your 70s, muscles can perform at levels comparable to someone decades younger – if strength training remains consistent.

This isn’t about chasing aesthetics or lifting extremes. It’s about resilience.

Why muscle matters as we age

Muscle supports far more than appearance. Maintaining it plays a key role in:

  • Metabolism and energy levels

  • Bone density and joint health

  • Hormone health

  • Injury prevention and recovery

  • Independence and quality of life

More muscle means more capacity to move well, adapt, and stay strong for life.

The most effective approach? Consistency.

Protecting muscle doesn’t require punishing workouts or ego lifting. Progressive strength training – gradually increasing challenge over time – is what builds and preserves muscle long-term.

No extremes. No shortcuts. But consistent effort.

Fuel matters, too

Muscle needs fuel to grow and recover. Adequate protein intake, paired with quality training, supports better recovery, better performance, and long-term strength.

And yes, you can absolutely build and maintain muscle on a plant-based diet.

It’s not about where protein comes from. It’s about getting enough, consistently.

When training and nutrition work together, strength becomes sustainable –not something that fades with age.

Train for the future

Strong women don’t “age out” of strength. They train for the life they want to keep living.

At Plant Forged, we believe strength is a lifestyle built intentionally, fueled consciously, and designed to last.
